The History Of Callaloo

Callaloo was established in 1997 with the emphasis on always being a Caribana Mas Band with family traditions… to this end, we continually enlist teams of vibrant and dedicated individuals who we are certain adhere to these traditional values and continue to make Callaloo the ‘band of choice’ for revelers, both now and in the future.

Callaloo Of Today

Callaloo has secured its position as one of the most celebrated and established bands participating in Toronto’s annual Caribana Celebrations.

The band has had many accolades in the past, most noteworthy of which is being selected as the winner of two of Caribana’s most coveted titles – BAND OF THE YEAR and the KIDDIES PARADE.

Callaloo has also won yet again, the CAYMAN ISLANDS 2009 CARNIVAL as well as many runner-up positions over the years in other major events, both locally and internationally.

Callaloo continues to grow and develop with a dedicated following of revelers from all walks of life.

Callaloo And The Community

Callaloo introduced mas in schools across the Greater Toronto Area with the intentions of teaching the culture and history behind Carnival and Mas. Students get to be involved with the many functions that are a part of creating costumes, arts & crafts and other structures associated with mas. These functions include sewing, fashion, modeling, hairdressing, welding, electrical and woodwork.

This is a huge step for our culture which has not even been done in Trinidad, the Mecca of Carnival. Students will not only be able to put these new skills on their resume, they will be able to obtain credit for community hours that will go towards their graduation.

For Marlon Singh, the leader of Callaloo, It is hoped that this pilot project will be a stepping stone for the development of similar projects in other schools – not only in Canada but around the world.

The Callaloo Experience

As always, Our main goal is always to satisfy our band member’s needs as best as we can provide , ensuring that the aspect of fun is maintained , so they will want to return to play mas with us year after year with focus on the attention to detail during the production of costumes to ensure their durability and provision of exceptional service that sets us apart from the rest.

We strongly believe that this focus will continue separate us from the rest and allow us to be known as one of the best Caribana bands.
